F. School-based assessment for the HKDSE Biology

Key Assessment Objectives

SBA is an integral part of the teaching and learning process, and involves assessment of students’ performances at different times during the course. With SBA, teachers can provide appropriate feedback to students so as to help consolidate the learning of biology concepts and scientific investigative skills, and foster the development of generic skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving.

Assessment mode:

Area A – Practical skills: (8%)

(a) organising and performing of practical work, including the use of suitable apparatus and equipment, and demonstrating the appropriate skills for carrying out the work;

(b) making accurate observations and measurements.

Area B – Report writing: (12%)

(a) Experimental Design (B1): (6%)

(i) identifying the problem to be investigated and formulating a hypothesis, and where applicable, putting it in a testable form;

(ii) devising a plan of investigation in accordance with the problem to be investigated;

(b) Results and discussions (B2): (6%)

(i) recording and presenting results in appropriate forms;(ii) interpreting and discussing results, and drawing appropriate conclusions.

*The percentages in brackets represent the weighting in the HKDSE Biology subject mark.

Criteria and Timeline

Performances are graded on a 10-point scale

·         Form 5: One Area A assessment and One Area B assessment, conducted in second term of the year.

·         Form 6: Two Area A assessments and Two Area B assessments, conducted between September and December.
